3/28/2024 0 Comments Headers to fit 1961 thunderbird![]() Headers are expensive, they don't last very long, they leak, they make it more difficult to work in tight places and I would have to cut and alter my exhaust system to install them. Some time has passed since then and I've pretty much decided not to bother with headers. I installed a performance ignition coil, an aluminum (Performer) intake manifold and a four barrel carburetor. I still thought I would install headers at some point in the future and decided to make a few other upgrades in the mean time. When I got my truck back from the muffler shop and went for a drive I was amazed just how much more power it had. Instead, I opted for 2.25" duals with turbo mufflers exiting from the stock exhaust manifolds. My original plan was to have them on my truck, but I needed a new exhaust system and couldn't afford headers at the time. Of course some type of mag wheels, wide tires and a stereo system were always added asap too. Back in high school, everyone I knew always installed "a four barrel and headers" almost immediately after acquiring a car (or truck). There was a time when I thought they were mandatory. I think, for my use, i'll just stick with the rusty old cast iron manifolds the factory gave me. Still yet today on any Saturday morning, you'll see hoods up in driveways with young & old installing a set of headers for a list of reasons only the header maker could come up with.I've heard all of the reasons & over the years have tested most of the reasons. Too many headers make it a knuckle busting job to change your starter. Too many headers kill your starter early. Too many headers don't fit well straight out of the box. I personally can't feel 12-15 hp in my rearend when I floor it. On the other hand installing headers on a stock daily driver, unless done by the factory, is asking for trouble. If your plan is to build your engine for towing, mud bogging, all types of racing, then headers can be the difference between winning & losing. Innovations include embossed copper exhaust gaskets, Dyno Pak bulk packs for the engine builder, proprietary gasket coatings and steel core laminates, precision molded polyurethane carburetor gaskets and the worlds only self-sealing copper racing head gaskets. That question has been asked thousands of times since modern engines were first designed.I personally believe they are really worth the gains in horsepower & torque, if you are building a horsepower/torque specific engine.
